About this episode
The hum of a buried feeling, the chatter of a broken familiarity – the mundane warped into the foreign, magnified and reinspected with a different lens. What you hear are the first sonic investigations of 28 students from the debut run of the Sonic Cultures minor at Willem de Kooning Academy, a variety broadcast collecting each one's particular curiosities and initial explorations into the field of sound art. Eased into listening by a whisper of wind, the first half of the show welcomes you with the familiar – warm voices of radio hosts, a public service announcement – and plays with what you may expect from it – distorting vocals and ideas that provoke a fermentation of their previous associations. All pieces in the show abstract, isolate, layer, and arrange sounds further to investigate their character, to hear how they can elicit responses that both amplify and starkly differ from the connotations of their worldly sources. Unease, intimacy, interruption, flow – distributing and demanding attention. Soundscapes emerging from environments, emotions and mental states – as the show began above, so it ends below – embraced by many varying dispositions of ambience: melodic, rhythmic and experimental.
