Urban goes rural... Listen on bugradio.org from 20hrs (19hrs in UK) This month's 24 hour audio stream (20-21 August) comes from the UK: a small wooded area on an otherwise bare moorland - a peat and heather landscape where sheep and deer roam freely and which is also used as a grouse shooting location by the local 'lord'. Many of the trees have fallen in storms creating a dense environment where many creatures seek shelter. In addition it is situated just a few metres away from the enormous Shap Blue quarry which extracts hornfels, a very hard stone mostly used in roadmaking and railway ballast. Normally one can hear the machines working in the daytime, although the depth of the quarry means that these are not so loud. Occasionally blast charges are used early in the morning. Other, more distant sounds to expect are from the railway and motorway. Although the grouse season has begun, I do not expect any shooting. Last night it rained very heavily which might affect the sounds around.
