I have entitled this radio show Belly Pressing, playing on a memory of me pushing my late dad’s stomach down as I couldn’t see the TV when I was small. It plays on a cynical reaction to laughter but also my most visceral memory of my childhood. My radio show will play out as an ongoing journey for the listener. I’m unsure what the destination could be, but that is part of it - the endeavour and the unknown of a journey. It will feature field recordings (my own and samples from family and public archives), dance music, spoken word, and musicology research in a storytelling structure. Almost like clues to where we are going. As a music-maker myself, I may indulge in live sampling and synthesis whilst recording my show. I have planned this as a means to navigate my half-Moroccan diaspora - the listener will be taken on a ‘mythical’ odyssey of music and culture. I enjoy writing, and so I plan to guide listeners through music, sounds, and information we find along our way. Each show will be a transition from the last, with different segments that reflect the place arrived. A thrilling techno mix, a story about Mariam Hassan, or a guided meditation of sorts within a whimsical garden. The show will act as my hour of broadcasted creative spells. What I am looking for within the show's journey is the space to explore where my creativity meets the intersection of my sense of self and cultural identity.
